And it’s not because I’m automatic. This little shorty antenna, his name is Stubbs, gets them REALLY fired up. I’m intrigued to see what they’ll say about it now that it has an antenna topper too!

Kinja'd!!!

If you remember I posted about getting some toppers. This is one of two stupid cheap ones I ordered. The other is a classic smiley with driving goggles. Looks extra silly on the shorty antenna, which is possibly why it’s staying on.

Also, I don’t hate Stubbs, but I do acknowledge it could look better. I’ve done nothing to change that - yet.

Why do other people have a strong negative opinion about your antenna? As a fellow Miata owner, I approve of it.

poor transition from the base to Stubbs - it’s actually a section cup that I’ve trimmed and could stand to trim just a little more so that it’s not just flat to circular antenna.

edit: AND bc I didn’t buy the normal one that’s like $15. I bought the $1?ish one from ebay

This is good.

I still miss “Brandon”, the Scion cube head antenna topper with a typical early-00s Millennial assortment of piercings, tattoos, and gauged ears. We stuck him on the antenna of my ex’s POS Malibu and somewhere in the 909 on the freeway that stupid antenna snapped, so he was lost/destroyed out there somewhere. :-(

Gotcha. My NA still has a functional power antenna, but I rarely use the radio so it stays down.

I don’t feel bad, frankly I was surprised by how many people were very upset about how bad it is. They were much more open to an automatic Miata over this little thing. Very strange group.

I have SiriusXM in my Fiat, but my 94 Miata came with a cheap aftermarket Sony Xplod head unit. I decided to keep it because it's so old and worthless that it probably serves as a theft deterrent. If I had a nice stereo I'd be more paranoid. I lost one car stereo to theft years ago.

Poor transition from the base, doesn’t go with the flow of the car, etc. Which it was really bad before I chopped up the section cup that is the transition from car to antenna - however they never saw that. They dislike it as it (and we shall see how it goes with topper).

They are really not a fan of the transition on the shorty antenna. I was surprised as well. I guess it might be worth noting I was in the ND, aka new Miata, section

10/25/2018 at 14:05

There is a 3" or 5" one that fits the base and creates a really smooth transition

People get weirder the more into one model they get. One thing that kind of baffles me is the general dislike in the Volvo community of the coffin hood. You could be looking at a clean turbo manual 240 for $500 and they would say it’s perfect except for that hood. Then they buy it and  spend another $500 for a flat hood on eBay from a scrapyard in Oregon.

Kinja'd!!!1

I’m sure that’s a cleaner look and all, but I can’t fathom the amount of fury for a slightly less clean look. I mean, sure, it could be better, but at the end of the day you’re not rolling coal or running 800 degrees of camber with that antenna, so... why all the fuss..? Miatas get modded thousands of different ways.

Do you have to submit mods for the Miata groups in advance for their design approvals too? I would expect that kind of anger from a HOA with too much time on their hands.

I do NOT miss posting in the Focus ST owners groups. It’s nothing but people going on about how stupid you are if you don’t have mods X, Y, and Z (oil catch cans and fuel filters and stuff) but then go apeshit spending on stuff like this:

Kinja'd!!!

I told people I was leaving my FoST stock and they got rustled. Then I told them I wouldn’t get a catch can and window vents for doing autocross and the screeching began in earnest. I shit you not, they claim you need those window vents to be on the track.. .

So I was on focaljet way back in the day before the ST in current bro form hit the market. It was a great community...however the transition was swift and dirty once the ST splashed down.

TIL window vents are a thing.

Honest question how is this different from just...you know... lowering the rear windows?

Kinja'd!!! themanwithsauce - has as many vehicles as job titles > TorqueToYield

Kinja'd!!!0

Allegedly, you often have to either roll the windows up completely or down completely on the track. So you either have blitzing wind gusts with the windows down or you bake with them fully up. In race cars, this is where they install a slidey vent in the plexiglass windows or you drill some holes up top. Again, in your plexiglass windows. In street cars, you jus t....turn on the A/C for a bit. I’ve never driven a street car in a session for so long that I get uncomfortable after letting the A/C chill the interior for a minute or two before the session starts.

It’s style. It’s 100% “style”. And it is a UK thing.

You won’t win this fight. They will spend 150$+ on these monstrosities, pay 200$ for a catch can setup, but lose their minds when I suggest the rear motor mount for under 100$ will make their car faster and better.
